Climate Mobility:Dosy is Changing Lives

Egypt faces a growing challenge of air pollution, traffic congestion, and rising carbon emissions, particularly in major urban centers such as Cairo and Alexandria. The transport sector is one of the largest
contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, yet sustainable, low-carbon alternatives remain underutilized due to infrastructure gaps and limited public awareness.
Women, in particular, encounter cultural and safety barriers that
prevent them from adopting eco-friendly mobility options such as
bicycles and scooters. Social stereotypes, concerns about harassment, and the lack of accessible training opportunities restrict their participation in climate solutions. This exclusion not only reinforces gender inequality but also overlooks the potential of women as key actors in sustainable urban transport.
Dosy, a pioneering women-led social enterprise in Egypt, has
addressed this gap by training over 7,000 women in scooter and
bicycle riding and creating jobs for more than 300 female instructors.
Beyond mobility training, Dosy promotes gender inclusion and
climate justice, showing how women’s empowerment can drive
environmental change.
By combining climate action with gender justice, this project
demonstrates how empowering women with mobility skills can reduce emissions, challenge social norms, and foster a culture of sustainable urban living. It is justified not only because it contributes to emission reduction, but also because it strengthens women’s agency in climate leadership and provides a scalable model for communities across Africa.
This capstone project seeks to empower women in Egypt through
sustainable mobility while addressing urgent climate and
environmental challenges. Transport is a major source of pollution
and emissions, yet women face cultural and safety barriers to
adopting eco-friendly options such as scooters and bicycles.
Through practical training sessions, an awareness campaign, and
the documentation of women’s stories, the project highlights
gender-inclusive solutions to climate change. It aligns with the
Africa Climate Leaders Fellowship’s vision of building resilient,
community-driven responses and contributes to reducing emissions,
promoting gender equity, and inspiring scalable action across
Africa.
